What is the definition of ethical hunting? That can spark quite a debate around the campfire among hunters. Equipment, skill, conditions and dozens of other variables come into play, making a true definition that satisfies all difficult. One thing we can all agree on is that a quick clean kill is the ultimate objective for any animal we hunt. This website strives to support that goal by providing hunters with an appreciation of the variables that can come into play once the animal is found in our sights, and by providing readers with some metrics for deciding whether a particular shot could be deemed too risky. There will be howls from hunters who profess to kill animals farther than that, but the reality we see in the field is quite different. Yes, there are some folks who can stretch those distances, but can you do it 95% of the time? Failures seldom get mentioned around the campfire, only the successes are noted with a “notice me” thought bubble.
Physical conditions, environmental conditions, equipment issues, individual skill level, and above all, setting aside one’s ego are considerations if we are to wear the title of an ethical hunter. Read More…
